Gilgul

After watching the trailer you will probobly realize that this film has nothing to do with Judaism. It was however made by the Israeli director, Nati Baratz.

The film itself is outstanding. It is about a former disciples search for his re-incarnated Tibetan master. It’s a really powerful film that shows the degree to which Buddhists believe in the axis mundi of their leaders.

I guess the question is, why is this movie on a Jewish culture blog. Obviously its easy to say that this movie reflects the influence of Eastern Religions on Tel Aviv cultures,,,etc etc…

I think that the Beshtian and Sabbatean parallels are evident, gilgul neshamot, Zaddik, etc etc…

I think the guy in this movie reeks of Dov Baerisms, but thats just my opinion…

anyways let me know what you think.

Akon singing Lecha Dodi

leave a comment »

I post way too many of these things….

I really don’t get it Diwon, Ylove and all the rest of these guys were  great hip hop artists and now they are all taking these Jewish prayers and mixing them with Lil Wayne and Akon.

This is Diwon’s remix of Lecha Dodi with Akon.

Shmoolik

Not quite the Shmoolik we all know and love in MTL.

This is Shmoolik that Hasidic hip hop artist from Parieeeeeee. For those of you that don’t speak French you will appreciate the listing of places like “sderot” and “gush katif” in his songs.

I have posted an interview with him on Walla and his big hit “the children of Israel”.

House

leave a comment »

No…not the annoying show about medical mysteries.

This is a film from 1980 about the implications of the 1948 war on the Palestinian residents of Jerusalem. The film traces the history of a house in West Jerusalem (Talbiyeh I think…),

the film was censored by Israeli television, but recently came out in Amos Gitai’s collection “territories”.

the entire film is available below.

“Further Back”

leave a comment »

This seems to be the first coherent film Amos Gitai has made in quite some time. The film is about the “secret Jewish identity” of a French woman and her trying to deal with the Holocaust and her “coming out” to her children. In a recent interview Amos Gitai said that this film is about the European refusal to deal with the Jewish question.

I apologize for the lack of subtitles.

Kutiman

I first saw Kutiman and Karolina open up for Erykah Badu in Tel Aviv last Feburary. Kutiman was originally in the awsome Duo “Sabbo and Kutti” and Karolina is in “Habanot Nechama” and “Karolina and Funkset”, she also does some stuff with the Ramirez Brothers.

Kutiman and Karolina are a part of a really talented group of musicians in Tel Aviv. Their music is that kind of “get up and dance” funk…

Death in Love

leave a comment »

“Death in Love” is another holocaust film in the year of “Defiance” and the “Reader”….It’s a really great movie and I hope it stands out amongst all the rest of WW2 films….

The film is about a Jewish woman who had a love affair with a Nazi doctor in a concentration camp and the psychological effect it has on her sons living in New York. It sounds pretty crazy right…..but It’s a really great film…

a real mind screw if you will..

Chaim Yavin

leave a comment »

Chaim Yavin was the voice of Israel from the inception of nightly news broadcast in the 60’s until a few years ago. Recently Chaim Yavin has become politically active and has produced two world class documentaries on the conflict. His first documentary, Land of the Settlers was highly controversial and nearly lost him his job as anchor for Channel 1.

I have included two clips from Land of the Settlers,

(shoutout DR, check out Meir Shalev in the second clip…)
