Avanti Popolo

I had to share this wonderful clip that I just found on youtube.

Avanti Popolo is one of my all time favorite movies. It won best foreign film at the oscars in 1986. The film is about two egyptian soldiers who are forced to travel across the Sinai to the suez canal after the 6 day war. The film was made in response to the patriotic films like two fingers from sidon, that were made after the 1982 war.

This scene is by far the most powerful in the whole film. The actor who recites the monologue happens to be an arab actor from alexandria who played Shylock in the merchant of venice before fighting in the 6 day war.

I have a copy of the film if you want to borrow it.

IDF BANDS

Last night I watched a documentary on IDF bands in the late 70’s. I was pretty shocked to see how much better they were compared to the singers you see on ha-shir shelanu.

The first video has pretty crappy quality, but the stuff is great starting at about half way. Really cute stuff, amazing for a bunch of 18 year olds.

the second video features 5 different idf bands, really great stuff as well, much better quality.
